Falling in love with your flatmate is never a good idea – but it certainly makes a good topic for a play.
Cohabitation: Bondi is a new Australian work about falling in love with your flatmate – and what happens the morning after the night before.
Written and directed by award-winning playwright and long-term Bondi resident, Jane Malone, Cohabitation: Bondi is a two-act romantic comedy set over a weekend, as one lease comes to an end and another begins. Simon and Kate are old friends, who’ve shared a bathroom and a remote for six months. Kate is a Bondi barista by day and an aspiring singer by night. Simon is a neuroscientist, frustrated his cutting edge research is yet to be picked up by an international publisher. Until an email arrives with the potential to not only fast track his career, but his relationship with Kate.
Fred and Gina share the house down the road. Gina’s been desperate to move to Bondi since Paris Hilton was photographed showering outside the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club. She’s, like, really intelligent – and seriously looking for love. The shy and circumspect evolutionary biologist Fred could not be a more unlikely flatmate. But nearing the end of her four-week probationary period, Gina is growing increasingly desperate to stay in Fred’s house.
Cohabitation Bondi will premiere in the newly renovated theatre inside Bondi Pavilion on September 29, 2009. The play is produced by the new inclusive theatre company The After Party Project.
