Experience the power of the classical voice in intimate and unique surroundings for a new ‘Salon Series’ co-presented by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Melba Opera Trust

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Melba Opera Trust have announced a partnership to bring sublime music by Australia’s most outstanding young opera singers into the grandeur of some of Victoria’s greatest historic heritage properties.

This new collaboration brings a distinctive synergy between two iconic Melbourne institutions, building on a shared commitment to enriching the state’s cultural fabric. It emphasises the National Trust of Australia (Victoria)’s commitment to revitalising heritage properties and making them dynamic cultural spaces for the community to enjoy.

The series will provide a public platform for the Melba Opera Trust’s exceptionally talented up-and coming artists to showcase their craft within inspiring and historically significant settings, continuing the vision of Dame Nellie Melba to nurture and develop the country’s best operatic talent.

The concerts present a transformative opportunity for artists and audiences alike, offering a return to the personal connection of music in the salon and to experience the enchanting storytelling of opera within the hallowed walls of historical landmarks.

Amy Black, CEO of Melba Opera Trust:

We’re thrilled to be partnering with National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to deliver this Salon Series. It’s such a natural fit: bringing an age-old artform back into stunning venues of another era.

Our artists spend their scholarship year with Melba honing their artistry, their languages, their business skills and their performances. This series provides a platform for that learning to be put into practise, heightening the experience for artists and audience alike thanks to the intimate and unusual settings.

Simon Ambrose, CEO of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), expressed his delight at the Salon Series collaboration between National Trust Victoria and Melba Trust Opera. He remarked,

It’s a true pleasure to witness the rising voices of the Melba Opera Trust resonating in various historic settings. This program, which invites audiences to experience opera at various National Trust sites, goes beyond the traditional boundaries of both opera and heritage, offering a unique and innovative cultural experience.

The inaugural ‘Salon Series – Beautiful Music in Historic Venues’ will take place at three historic venues around Melbourne: Pentridge Prison (Coburg), Labassa Mansion (Caulfield) and Como House (South Yarra).

Performances feature the 2024 Melba Artists and Melba alumni, comprising some of the most out standing young opera singers and repetiteurs in the country. Concerts promise an unforgettable journey through the emotive landscapes of classical and contemporary opera.

Tickets for the concerts will go on sale from Monday 5 February and be available to purchase through the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Melba Opera Trust websites
