Dream album: Cast album confirmed for brand new Aussie musical Dream Lover

Sony Music to produce cast album for World Premiere of Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical.

More than six years ago, AussieTheatre.com reported on the development of brand new musical Dream Lover, written by Frank Howson and John-Michael, bankrolled by producer John Frost.

In the following years, this musical about the life of American singer, songwriter and actor Bobby Darin was workshopped by Australian actors and directed by Simon Phillips, who had just successfully staged Australia’s premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies – sequel to The Phantom Of The Opera – which achieved international acclaim following the release of a DVD of the production.

Twelve months ago, John “Frosty The Showman” Frost confirmed that Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical would finally be hitting the main stage, with a world premiere confirmed for August 2016 and cast announcements have peppered the musical theatre news cycle of late.

And today, another big announcement from the Dream Lover camp has made its way to the news.

The producers of Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical, together with Sony Music Entertainment Australia confirmed that a cast album for the World Premiere musical will be released in August, just in time for the show’s opening at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, The Star.

The single ‘Dream Lover’ is available on iTunes from today, Friday 15 July!

Stage and television favourite David Campbell will star in the musical (and on the album) as the iconic performer Bobby Darin, opposite Caroline O’Connor, Hannah Fredericksen as Sandra Dee, Bert LaBonte, Martin Crewes and Marney McQueen.

The musical features 34 great hits from the 50s and 60s including ‘Mack The Knife’, ‘Beyond the Sea’, ‘Splish Splash’ and the multi-million-seller ‘Dream Lover’. An intimate and epic story of an all- round entertainer, adored by his fans together with his movie star wife Sandra Dee, provided the iconic soundtrack to a generation.

Directed by Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical, Love Never Dies) and with an 18 piece band musically supervised by Guy Simpson, the musical captures the glamour and passion of the big band era, the Rat Pack in Vegas and the Golden Age of Hollywood, a time of trail-blazing stars, knock-out fashions and life-changing events.

Performances commences 22 August 2016
