Django In Pain to air digitally at Melbourne Fringe

After successful runs in New York, Mexico, ArgenNna, UK, Sweden and Ukraine; PlayCo (New York) and Por Piedad Teatro (Mexico) will premiere DJANGO IN PAIN at Melbourne Fringe.

This almost 60 minutes filmed theater show, begins with Antonio Vega opening up about his own depression while trying to write a play about a playwright that wants to write a “happy play” but he can’t, because his main character wants to kill himself. Django in Pain chronicles the misfortunes and adventures of Django, a puppet loosely inspired by Django Reinhardt – and a three-legged dog in a mulG-layered tale of despair, loyalty and hope.

Theatre arGsts Antonio Vega and Ana Graham fully embarked on craIing and filming this “theatrical-montage ” in their apartment in New York during lockdown, using hand-made puppets and transforming household and found objects. Meanwhile, musician Cristóbal MarYan composed and recorded the music from his own apartment in Mexico City. Together they created a whimsically world the size of a glass draIing desk that acutely reflects this unprecedented Gmes, yet speaks to any moment in history.

Kate Loewald, arGsGc director of PlayCo:

Ana and Antonio always inspire me, as arGsts, as producers with their company Por Piedad Teatro, and as people. Django in Pain is an astonishing and beauGful piece about depression, creaGvity and love. It’s both deeply personal and universal. This is the fourth project we’ve produced together and they never cease to amaze me with their sense of humor, invenGon and compassion.

Winner of the presGgious Mexican award, Premio Metropolitano de Teatro 2022, as best Theatre in Video. Django in Pain will be offered as a digital event in English with close capGon opGon. It will be available for streaming on-demand from Oct 6 to Oct 23.
