On the back of the announcement, Brisbane Festival is now calling for independent and emerging artists who are interested in having their work considered for the 2013 program. Mr Berthold will curate a slate of works with a focus on contemporary performance.

Berthold’s impressive international career has touched many of Australians major theatre companies and as Artistic Director he has been attributed with turning Sydney’s Griffin Theatre Company into the nation’s most visible and successful arts organisation. The long-time arts advocate and adviser has received multiple awards for his contribution to theatre in Queensland and as Artistic Director of La Boite Theatre Company (since 2008), Berthold reflects with pride on how the company has committed and delivered on nurturing independent theatre. Berthold sees the appointment with Brisbane Festival as a terrific extension of that work.

“I am anticipating great things to unfold under David’s curatorship,” Brisbane Festival Artistic Director, Noel Staunton enthuses.

“This is a new initiative and one that has the potential to uncover some amazing talent from Brisbane, across the country and internationally.”

Mr Berthold, who directed the festival’s acclaimed Tender Napalm in 2012, similarly expressed that [he is] “really looking forward to working with Noel Staunton and the Brisbane Festival team to see how far we can push the boundaries and give audiences an exciting and bold program in September.”

Expressions of interest are being accepted until 5pm on Friday 8 March 2013 and more information can be found at the website www.brisbanefestival.com.au under the scintillating banner ‘Visually and Aurally Engaging’.
