Dame Edna to host a free Opera For The People event at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl

The most famous arias and Australia’s most famous housewife, all under the stars for free!

On Saturday 1 February 2020, Opera Australia and Anthony Pratt present Opera for the People, a free performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Hosting the evening will be the inimitable Dame Edna.

Dame Edna

“I’ve never graced Melbourne’s historic Music Bowl so hosting this Opera for the People is a first and it’ll be the operatic experience of a lifetime”.

Edna will be joined on stage by some of Australia’s best singers, including local Melbournian Baritone Simon Meadows and Mezzo Soprano Angela Hogan. They will all perform alongside Orchestra Victoria under the baton of Brian Castles-Onion.

The evening will be filled with exhilarating performances of opera’s best known arias and overtures including the Habanera from Carmen, Nessun Dorma from Turandot, and musical classics to sing along to from My Fair Lady and Annie Get your Gun. Opera for the People has a fantastic program that is sure to delight opera aficionados and novices alike.

Thanks to the generosity of Anthony Pratt – who is continuing his invaluable contribution to Australia’s cultural landscape by introducing new audiences to opera and classical music – this wonderful night of entertainment is totally free of charge, in an important effort to make the arts more accessible to Australians
