It was confirmed today that the upcoming Australian tour of The Sound of Music (set to open at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on 13 December 2015) will star multi award winning performer Cameron Daddo as Captain von Trapp and musical theatre star Amy Lehpamer in the coveted role of Maria.

Lehpamer is currently appearing as Janet in GFO’s revival of The Rocky Horror Show and has previously played leading roles in Rock Of Ages (Sherie), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Christine Colgate), Once (Reza) and Margaret Fulton: Queen of the Dessert. She joins an impressive list of fellow Australians who have starred as the flighty Austrian governess including June Bronhill, Julie Anthony and Lisa McCune.

At the cast announcement in Sydney today, Lehpamer quipped she’s thrilled this “isn’t an elaborate prank.” She “learned to sing from The Sound of Music.”

This acclaimed new production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical will be produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Frost, David Ian and the Really Useful Group. The show enjoyed new life at the London Palladium (one of the six West End theatres owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber) in 2006, running for 954 performances. The Australian production will open in Sydney and tour to Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre from 11 March, 2016. Further tour dates have not been confirmed at this stage.

Joining the principal cast will be musical theatre leading lady Marina Prior as Baroness Schraeder, opera star Jacqueline Dark as Mother Abbess, Lorraine Bayly (Calendar Girls,The Sullivans) as Frau Schmidt and David James (Playschool, Avenue Q) as Max Detweiler.

Captain von Trapp’s eldest daughter Leisl will be played by the talented Stefanie Jones (Once, South Pacific), who appeared as clever young Brigitta in the previous tour of The Sound of Music, starring Lisa McCune in 2000. Leisl’s beloved Rolf will be played by newcomer Du Toit Bredenkamp.

The ensemble cast includes Johanna Allen (Sister Sophia), Eleanor Blythman (Sister Margaretta), Sophie Cheeseman, Colin Dean, William Groucutt, Stephen Madsen, Dominica Matthews (Sister Berthe), Katie McKee, Kathleen Moore, Ashleigh Rubenach and Sophie Weiss.
