In the musical theatre world, Stephen Sondheim is considered to be one of the masters of the form. His musicals – of which there are many – are treated like gold, and performers relish his lyrics and melody with alacrity and enthusiasm.
Musical theatre enthusiasts Australia-wide will be thrilled to hear that the master himself will appear in a special event One Evening with Stephen Sondheim at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre this October, presented by the Sofitel on Collins as part of the new initiative called The Guest Series. The Guest Series will fall under the umbrella of the ANZ Trustees Foundation – Rob Guest Endowment and proceeds from the event will be contributed to the annual endowment which assists emerging musical theatre performers in their professional endeavours.
As previously announced on AussieTheatre, Sondheim will be in Melbourne to attend the highly anticipated season of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum directed by Simon Phillips, starring Geoffrey Rush and presented by John Frost of GFO.
On October 22 at 7:30pm, Australia’s preeminent interviewer – Ray Martin – will host an evening of music and conversation with ‘the greatest artsist in American musical theatre’ (New York Times) on the set of Forum, one of Sondheim’s earliest musical offerings.
“It was with great delight and excitement that I was able to confirm that Stephen Sondheim would be attending our Premiere back when we announced this new production of Forum“, said Producer John Frost, OAM.
“To now be able to announce this one night only evening with Sondheim is sure to make that one week in October a highlight on the national arts calendar for 2012″, he said.
One Evening with Stephen Sondheim will be musically directed by Kellie Dickerson and feature a stellar line-up of Australian talent performing selections from Sondheim’s body of work. Artists will be announced at a later date.
“I look forward to being able to unveil the lineup of Australian talent that will join Sondheim in conversation with Ray Martin just days before we open”, said John Frost.
The Melbourne exclusive 12-week only season of Forum commences on October 20 in advance of the official opening night on October 27.
