Friels, who has been suffering from the flu and is in long-term remission from pancreatic cancer, collapsed during the second act of the play after making the decision to perform despite feeling unwell.

It is understood he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital and has been undergoing tests.

Performances of Death of a Salesman have been cancelled tonight, as well as tomorrow’s matinee and evening shows.

A spokesperson for Belvoir told The Australian that it was hoped Friels would be able to play Salesman’s final show on Sunday afternoon ahead of its transfer to the Theatre Royal in October.

Ticket holders for the cancelled shows can exchange them for seats at the Theatre Royal during its upcoming run.
