City of Angels prepares for a steamy Melbourne opening

Musical theatre fans on the eastern seaboard will agree that new life has been injected into the Australian independent musical theatre scene of late with companies like Hayes Theatre Co and Squabbalogic in Sydney and Watch This and Life Like Company in Melbourne producing some of the most exciting works we have seen on stage in a long time.

This week, the latest boutique musical to grace the stage is City of Angels, which descends on Arts Centre Melbourne with an all star cast, a sizzling jazz score, witty lyrics and some fierce and fabulous harmonies (that opening number!) We can’t wait for Melbourne to experience this steamy new production brought to the stage by Life Like Company, who stepped onto the Aussie musical theatre stage last year with their production of Sondheim’s Passion, and are showing no signs of slowing down!

Directed by Martin Croft and musically directed by Kellie Dickerson, their second offering on the independent stage is Cy Coleman’s noir – a wickedly funny celebration of the 1940s film noir genre and dark detective fiction which takes place in two worlds. City of Angels follows Stine, the ambitious writer of a Hollywood screenplay (Anton Berezin) and his struggle to negotiate his demanding studio boss, his relationship with wife Gabby (Chelsea Plumley) and his fictional alter-ego in the “reel” world, private eye “Stone” (Kane Alexander).

Kane Alexander, Amanda Harrison, Anton Berezin, Chelsea Plumley, Troy Sussman, Rohan Browne and Anne Wood star in this new Australian production with featured performances from Connor Crawford, Hannah Fredericksen, Andrew Kroenert, Melissa Langton, Jennifer Peers with Adam Fiorentino as Lieutenant Munoz.

Life Like Company have produced a series of wonderful videos in the lead up to this production, including this Stine and Stone face off in the studio in anticipation of the opening night on November 5.
