Casey Donovan Shines in Lead Role for Sister Act Musical Debut

Australian vocal powerhouse Casey Donovan is stepping into the spotlight with her debut lead role in the stage adaptation of Sister Act, a role made iconic by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1992 film. The musical, which has already seen success on Broadway and in the UK, has now made its way to Australia, with Donovan leading a star-studded cast as Deloris Van Cartier.

Despite her extensive experience on stage, Donovan admits she’s feeling the nerves as opening night approaches. However, she’s channeling that anxiety into her performance, using it to fuel her portrayal of the bold and charismatic Deloris.

Donovan is no stranger to the stage, having appeared in major productions like The Sapphires, Chicago, and Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 The Musical. She also made history as the youngest winner of Australian Idol in 2004, kickstarting her career at just 16 years old. But Sister Act marks a new milestone for Donovan as she takes on her first leading role in a stage production.

Joining Donovan on stage are industry veterans Rhonda Burchmore and Genevieve Lemon, adding to the excitement of the show. The musical features original music by Tony and Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, known for his work on beloved animated films like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Audiences can expect a soundtrack inspired by the soulful sounds of Motown from the 1960s.

Sister Act premieres at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney on Sunday before heading to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. With Donovan at the helm, this production promises to bring joy and energy to audiences across Australia.
