David Campbell played to a packed Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House on Friday night, in a show that would have to be one of the highlights of his career so far.
A crowd of over 2300 gave Campbell an immediate and spontaneous standing ovation after a two and a half show of Broadway hits, many from his new Broadway CD.
He was backed by a lush 30 piece orchestra under the direction of Guy Simpson.
Campbell is in the process of touring this large scale concert to every state in Australia and still has two shows in Adelaide next weekend to go.
The show reflects his love of Broadway and musical theatre and he speaks much of his career in New York. The show moves away from the swing and pop styles of his previous albums and shows.
The undoubted highlight of the night was his rendition of the song ‘Till I hear You Sing’ (not a number from his album) from the new Phantom of the Opera sequel, Love Never Dies. Other highlights included a powerhouse rendition of ‘Soliloquy’ from Carousel, ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables and a finale that consisted of several numbers made famous by the great Broadway showman, Al Jolson.
Campbell’s ability to be a first rate comic also came to the fore especially when, with the help of modern technology, he performed all three roles in the song ‘Fugue for Tinhorns’ from Guys and Dolls.
