Brothers Wreck will be directed by Leah Purcell at Belvoir

2013 Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award winner Jada Alberts is bringing her new play Brothers Wreck to Belvoir in May, and celebrated storyteller Leah Purcell will direct.

It begins with a death. On a hot morning under a house in Darwin, Ruben wakes to find his cousin Joe hanging from the rafters. The play is about Ruben’s family and how they bring him back from the edge. It’s a play about loss and redemption.

Jada Alberts (This Heaven) is an actor and theatre-maker who is driven to tell the stories of her community. To help her achieve this goal an outstanding cast of Indigenous artists has been assembled. They include Rarriwuy Hickis (Bangarra Dance Theatre), Hunter Page-Lochard (Black Diggers), Bjorn Stewart (Coranderrk), Lisa Flanagan (The Gods of Wheat Street), and Cramer Cain (Redfern Now).

And then there’s Leah Purcell. Possibly best known for her one-woman show Box the Pony, she has had recent recognitiion and success as both a writer and a director. She has a humanistic approach that is a good match for an honest story.

Indigenous theatre at Belvoir supported by The Balnaves Foundation.

Brothers Wreck will play at Belvoir St Theatre from 24 May – 22 June 2014. For tickets and more information, call Belvoir on 02 9699 3444 or visit belvoir.com.au.
