Broadway Unplugged launches Project X, Sydney

AussieTheatre and Broadway Unplugged are pleased to announce Project X – a new musical theatre competition with an exciting edge.

Broadway Unplugged StageSydney’s newest industry event, Broadway Unplugged, opened last month at the Vanguard in Newtown and members of the Australian theatre and musical theatre community have raved about the event ever since.

Today, Broadway Unplugged in conjunction with AussieTheatre launched Project X, a competition aimed at both new and up-and-coming musical theatre performers.

Project X is a competition designed to identify and support talented new musical theatre performers and to provide them with live performance opportunities and valuable industry exposure.

A joint initiative of Broadway Unplugged and Aussie theatre, the competition is aimed at further supporting Broadway Unplugged’s mission to provide a platform for the development of future Australian musical theatre artists and AussieTheatre’s belief in strengthening the support for artists in Australia.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

If you believe you are a new and up-and-coming musical theatre performer, you are eligible to opt-in to this competition.

Please note: If you’d like to take part in Open Mic but not Project X, simply opt out of the competition when you register via the Broadway Unplugged online registration.

How does Project X work?

At Broadway Unplugged’s Open Mic Night, members of the community (both professional and non-professional) are welcome to take to the stage and perform our their favourite tune in a supportive environment.

Each eligible Broadway Unplugged open-mic participant who registers to perform at one of the monthly Broadway Unplugged has the option to enter into the Project X competition. Upon giving their written consent, open-mic participants will have their performance filmed and posted on BroadwayUnplugged’s YouTube Channel.

Shortly after each Broadway Unplugged, AussieTheatre will share the performance videos and open a voting system where viewers can vote each month for their favourite open-mic performer. The first two months’ videos will be combined and two winners will be chosen to feature at Broadway Unplugged in August.

The performer with the most votes at the close of each voting round will be invited to perform as a featured artist at the following month’s Broadway Unplugged.

Each of the monthly featured artists receive publicity and press via the Broadway Unplugged website AussieTheatre.com and associated and social media platforms.

The winners of the monthly Project X competition will participate in a grand final at an exclusive Broadway Unplugged event. Grand finalists will be judged by a panel of prominent Australian musical theatre industry artists, producers and directors.

The winner of the grand final will receive their own solo cabaret showcase at the Vanguard, produced by James Anthony Productions and promoted by AussieTheatre. Other prizes are yet to be confirmed.

Broadway Unplugged’s next event will be hosted by Jeremy Brennan (Jersey Boys) at the Vanguard (Newtown) on Monday 30 July with featured artists performing from 8pm and Open Mic from 9pm till late.

Register to sing online and take part in this wonderful industry event.
