Black Swan State Theatre Company is looking forward to the official opening of its new home, the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, on January 27, followed by the first gala performances on the Heath Ledger Theatre stage on January 29 and Open Day on January 30.
Black Swan took up residence in the Company’s new office in the State Theatre Centre on Level 1, 182 William Street in mid-December, and will start rehearsals for its first production, Boundary Street, in the State Theatre Centre’s main rehearsal room on January 31.
“This long anticipated move has exceeded our expectations. All staff as well as the designers and artists working from our office have commented on how exciting it is to be based in the actual theatre complex and in the middle of the vibrant Cultural Centre and William Street precinct,” said Shane Colquhoun, Black Swan’s General Manager.
“We look forward to the civic opening ceremony of the State Theatre Centre on January 27 and encourage Perth residents to visit the new theatre as well as the revitalized Cultural Centre during ‘O-Day’ on January 30 to get their first glimpse of this outstanding new theatre and the other attractions in the area.”
Kate Cherry, Black Swan State Theatre Company’s Artistic Director said Black Swan’s move to the new State Theatre Centre of WA is the start of a new era for the Company.
“I look forward to start utilising the fantastic performance spaces and the state-of-the-art staging technology, which allows us to become bolder and more ambitious in our artistic work and attract larger audiences,” she said.
Boundary Street, a swinging wartime story featuring jazz musician James Morrison and directed by Kate Cherry will be Black Swan’s first production in the State Theatre Centre’s Heath Ledger Theatre, opening on March 5.
Boundary Street is a co-production with the Perth International Arts Festival and Brisbane Festival.
