For the first time, respected theatre companies Bell Shakespeare and State Theatre Company of South Australia are collaborating. Today, June 28, their national tour of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors will debut, directed by Imara Savage.
A zany story of mistaken identity, The Comedy of Errors charts two sets of identical twins, long separated, whose lives get fully, and hilariously, entangled completely by accident.
The cast is a mix of Sydney and Adelaide’s sharpest: Nathan O’Keefe (Pinocchio), Septimus Caton (Happy Feet 2), Renato Musolina (The Kreutzer Sonata), Hazem Shammas (Macbeth), Elena Carapetis (Truck Stop), Jude Henshall (The Wizard of Oz), Eugene Gilfedder (Holding The Man), and Anthony Taufa, Demitrious Sirilas and Suzannah McDonald.
“The Comedy of Errors is a farce, but there is darkness in light,” said Savage.
“Shakespeare raises questions of identity, sameness, and difference. It’s about the fear of the other, fear of the unknown. And it’s about brotherhood and reconciliation.
“I’m looking forward to touring the country with a diverse cast of 10 Australian actors who will revinvent themselves in different guises to populate the eclectic town of Ephesus.”
This premiere collaborative season premieres in Adelaide, before launching an extensive five month tour to a massive 31 locations, including Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney.
