Bangarra Dance Theatre set to debut new work in Melbourne

Bangarra Dance Theatre is set to debut its brand new work, Blak. A dynamic, emotionally powerful piece, Blak is about a contemporary clan and the collision of two worlds.

Blak will have its World Premiere season in Melbourne from May 3, and from there will head to Wollongong, Sydney, Canberra, and in Brisbane, wrapping up the national tour at the end of July.

Artistic Director Stephen Page and dancer/choreographer Daniel Riley McKinley have created a work that peels back the layers of men’s business and women’s business, crossing the worlds of old and modern to expose universal longing for spiritual connection.

“We knew we were trying to shift people’s black consciousness and that has always fuelled our passion, our hunt,” Page told AussieTheatre’s Dione Joseph in a recent interview.

“As we continue to grow and expand our stories and our skills as storytellers continue to grow. We are part of a history, a legacy and those vows to carry those stories with truth and integrity will always be a cornerstone of Bangarra’s values.”

The soundscape for Blak will be provided by multiple Aria award winning Paul Mac, and fourteen dancers will be featured in the piece, including guest artist Hunter Page-Lochard, recently seen in Sydney Theatre Company’s Bloodland and The Sapphires on film.
