Back in the bubble: Mathers to return to Wicked for Brisbane

It was confirmed this morning that Suzie Mathers will return from her base in London to return to the stage as Glinda the Good in the Australian 10th Anniversary production of WICKED for its Brisbane and Perth seasons.

Mathers will take over from Lucy Durack, who has recently announced her next big role – motherhood!

Durack originated the role of Glinda in the 2008 debut of Wicked at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre and Mathers was an original ensemble member in the show.

After landing the coveted role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Durack passed the role of Glinda on to Mathers (who had previously left the cast of Wicked to play the lead role of Sophie in the Australian tour of Mamma Mia) in 2011 for the Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand and Manila seasons of Wicked.

Mathers then handed the bubble dress and wand back to Durack while she made her way to London to appear in a new musical production of Jaberwocky at the St James Theatre, and in Hello Jerry! with the RTE Concert Orchestra in Dublin.

“I am thrilled that Suzie could return from London to play Glinda in this 10th Anniversary tour”, Producer John Frost said in a statement.

“Suzie was a knockout in this role internationally, and I know Australian audiences will be delighted to see her acclaimed performance.”

Frost has confirmed that Mathers will perform at selected shows “towards the end of the Sydney run” opposite co-stars Jemma Rix, Reg Livermore and Steve Danielsen.

Mathers and the company’s new Wizard, Simon Gallaher, will then commence officially in the Brisbane season from 12 February and travel with the company to Perth from 3 May 2015.

WICKED plays at Sydney’s magnificent Capitol Theatre until January 30, then transfers to the Lyric Theatre, QPAC from 12 February and to the Crown Theatre, Burswood from 3 May for a strictly limited season. wickedthemusical.com.au
