Opera Australia’s acclaimed production of South Pacific, starring Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Lisa McCune is set to be filmed for DVD release.

Cameras were assembled in the Opera Theatre this afternoon to immortalise a live performance of the production. Alex Budd, General Manager of Opera Enterprises announced to the matinee crowd that “We are making history here today”.

“This production has been seen on Broadway, it’s been seen on the West End in London and today is the very first time that the Rodgers and Hammerstein organisation, supported by Oscar Hammerstein’s grandson… have allowed this production to be filmed for DVD release”, he announced in his pre-show speech at the Sydney Opera House.

“We at Opera Australia, and the cast behind me, are deeply humbled by this honour. Thank you for being here on this special day and helping us make history.

No details about when the recording will be available have been released at this stage.

South Pacific opens in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre on 15 September, with previews from 13 September.

  • "We at Opera Australia... are deeply humbled by this honour. Thank you for being here on this special day and helping us make history." A brilliant and forward-thinking response; capturing live theatre to DVD should be standard practice! I would subscribe in a heartbeat! Bravo!

  • Great news; I really loved this production. I also saw the revival at Lincoln Centre and preferred the Sydney cast.
Looking foirward to purchasing this DVD
