ATYP are proud to announce their 2020 season

In 2020 ATYP is wrestling with the complexities of growing up and growing older. As this century moves out of its teens ATYP is reflecting on what it is to “grow up”. Featuring six world premiere productions of new Australian theatre written by both established award-winning playwrights and some of the countries most exciting emerging writers, this is a season not to be missed.

How do you move into the future, when your past keeps dragging you backwards?

CUSP juxtaposes the Northern Territory’s vast Top End landscape with the turbulent lives of three emerging adults as they swim against the tide of irrevocable change. Balancing choice versus fate in a world where “Some people just get better choices than others.”

“Things seem darker in the dark, don’t they? Okay, that sounded more profound in my head.”

One quiet night, the street lights flicker out and plunge the world into darkness. A ‘lights out’ party in Royal Park is announced, and every kid in town makes their way there to celebrate this strange occurrence.

Lights in the Park was the winner of the 2018 ATYP Foundation Commission for 14-17 year olds.

We grow up being lied to. Often for good reasons – so we can believe in something magical, to believe we can be whoever we want to be, or to shield us from pain. This is about those moments.

The Lies We Were Told features an ensemble of young people aged 8-18 who will share personal stories and verbatim texts, investigating the moments when it felt like you grew up in one day, or one hour, or one minute and nothing would ever be the same again.

The battle between AI and humans is about to get real!

The year is 2079 and Artificial Intelligence coexists peacefully with humans. Until an exceptionally clever AI, named Neutron Finch, reads all of humanity’s literary works in one day and gets a lot of attention for it…

Neutron attracts a gaggle of AI followers and they summon a group of sixth-graders, the Secret Six, to the oval and demand their SOULS! Will their soul-searching provide the answers they need to stop AI becoming humanity’s worst nightmare?

Soul Trading was the winner of the 2019 ATYP Foundation Commission for 10-13 year olds.
