40 years have passed since Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s ground breaking, epic musical Sweeney Todd first made its way into the musical theatre consciousness, but the epic tale of love and revenge is still well loved around the world.
Serious star power is being thrown behind the project with Australia’s favourite leading man Anthony Warlow (Phantom of the Opera, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof) in the titular role of Sweeney Todd and Gina Riley (Kath and Kim) as pie-shop owner Mrs Lovatt. Directed by Theresa Borg and musically directed by Vanessa Scammell, the production will play limited seasons at Sydney’s new Darling Harbour Theatre , ICC Sydney (13-16 June) and at Her Majesty’s Theatre Melbourne (20 – 23 June).

“This gift of a role, one I have coveted for so long, has finally arrived. I look forward to adding Mr. Todd to the illustrious canon of characters I have had the privilege of playing over the years.”
Well known as Australia’s original Phantom in the Melbourne premiere production of The Phantom of The Opera, Anthony Warlow has appeared in musicals and operas in Australia and internationally since 1980.
Although Riley is best known for her television work, she is no stranger to the stage, having previously appeared in a number of musicals including playing Janet in The Rocky Horror Show, The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods and Mama Morton in Chicago.
