A WONDER of a puppet show

This year marks Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s 40th anniversary, and the seventh annual collaboration between the Fremantle-based company and WAAPA’s Performance Making students.

This exciting partnership introduces WAAPA’s students to the world of visual storytelling through the physical and imaginative demands of puppet theatre – and who better to teach the students than Australia’s flagship puppetry company dedicated to the development of the art form.

For their final show before they graduate, the students are letting loose their creative inventiveness to bring Spare Parts’ history, building, surrounding parkland, and favourite puppets to magical life in Wonder, a stunning promenade performance that celebrates 40 years of contemporary puppetry.

Wonder, devised and performed by WAAPA’s 3rd Year Performance Making students under the direction of Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s Associate Director Michael Barlow, will be performed at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre for two shows only on Saturday 6 November at 2.00pm and 7.00pm.

“This promenade performance is being made for an audience of all ages – for the young and the young at heart,” says Barlow. “We are bringing many of Spare Parts most loved puppets out of the archive for one special day, to celebrate 40 years of nurturing a sense of wonder.”

Spare Parts is thrilled to share our milestone year with the WAAPA Performance Making students, who are an exciting new force in Australian theatre, he says.

“Whether or not they go on to become puppeteers, our puppetry training offers many valuable skills for these aspiring theatre makers. It’s a great foundation for making image-based, kinetic work and we look forward to what these artists do with the art form next.”

Join in celebrating Spare Parts’ anniversary year and the talents of WAAPA’s graduating Performance Making students with this extra-special show – made and performed in wonder.
