Barely a week goes by without a cultural festival in Victoria, but things were different in the 1970s when the tiny Gippsland town of Korumburra began a festival to celebrate the three-metre long earthworms that are only found in a 100,000 hectare area around their town.
Writer/performer Melita Rowston loves kitsch, crap and big thing tourism and Hey! Yeah! It's Molly's Travelling Worm Show! is about the “best damn crap tourism destination she discovered in all her adventures around the world”.
Opening this week at Malthouse Theatre, it's the third in the 2013 Helium program of independent theatre and runs until 24 August in the Tower Theatre.
Rowston celebrates moments like Daryl Somer's ride as the Worm King, countless worm children and Karmai, the world's biggest worm puppet made from a hundred metres of pink material, two golf buggy wheels, two salad bowls, a compost bin and a roll of poly pipe.
It's a work about following your dreams, no matter how shit they are and how even a giant worm can became a local hero.
