7 Must See Shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival

Danny McGinlay Learns Ukrainian

With the comedy festival fast approaching we caught up with our regular MICF correspondant, Danny McGinlay, to get his picks of the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

As Danny is a remarkably humble man he overlooked mentioning his own show, Danny McGinlay Learns Ukrainian, which opens on the 10th of April at The Upstairs Lounge @ Hairy Little Sista.

The Ron Way – Ronny Chieng

Danny Says: The hottest young thing in Australian comedy is definitely Ronny Chieng. He’s been doing comedy for less than two years but is already on par with a lot of professionals. His work ethic is amazing and his gags are top notch. His debut solo show is called The Ron Way. Get onboard.

Gordon Southern

Gordon Southern – A Brief History of History

Danny Says: The other end of the scale, the UK’s Gordon Southern is a true veteran and it shows. Exceptionally smooth and his crowd banter is a joy. He’s in a smallish venue this year so he will sell out, book early!

Jimmy James Eaton

Jimmy James Eaton – One Small Sketch For Man

Danny Says: If you want something different to traditional stand up, check out Jimmy James Eaton’s one man sketch show. He’s a giant hilarious baby with high octane improv skills. He recently told me this show is so exhausting he may die, so best see him early on just in case.

WATSON – Shakespeare Fight Club

WATSON – Shakespeare Fight Club

Danny Says: The greatest show in last year’s festival was a late night double act named ‘Watson’. Remember on school camps when some students would put on a play and it was nonsensical, imagine that but make it really really funny. That’s what these guys do, and they do it well. This year’s show is called ‘Shakespeare Fight Club’. Say no more, just buy tickets.

Dom Romeo

Geraldine Hickey – Turns Out I Do Like Sun Dried Tomatoes

Danny Says: Geraldine Hickey recently came out of the closet and is doing a show about it, brilliantly named “Turns out I do like sun-dried tomatoes”. Gezza is a local gem who can be hilarious about the most poignant of subjects, as well as a damn fine dick joke. This should be fun.

Dom Romeo

Dom Romeo – Stand-Up Sit-Down: Comics in Conversation

Danny Says:Finally if you are interested in the more technical/theoretical side of comedy, Dom Romeo is hosting a late night chat show with comedians to talk about their work. Like ‘Inside the Actor’s studio’ but with comedians, come see why we’re all messed up.
