500+ Performers sign open letter to Rob Guest Endowment committee

Today, an open letter to the endowment was released from 547 performers. The letter came as a response to the events cancellation, which the RGE committee claimed was in defence of the semi finalists mental health. The letter was originally intended to be signed by past participants but has grown in support to over 500+ signatures from past winners, finalists, and industry members.

AussieTheatre has been sent a copy of the letter below:

To the Rob Guest Endowment Leadership Committee, 

We are writing to you as a united voice, representing past Top 30 finalists of the Rob Guest Endowment.

We would like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

We have read your recent statement, and announcement that this year’s scholarship grant has been cancelled. Your reason for this, is that you must protect the Top 30 finalists from ‘bullying’ from the community.

Countless people have raised their voice against this reason today.

We all acknowledge that this situation has been difficult for the current Top 30 finalists. This industry is damaging to mental health in many ways, and so we applaud any genuine efforts to look after performers. I would hope that this is a genuine statement, and not an easy excuse to cancel the scholarship this year, and as such, any more criticism and discussion.

If it is a genuine statement, we would expect that the Top 30 all agreed to this decision and that the choice was led by them. We would also expect that the foundation is providing support and counselling through this sudden cancellation, and not leaving the performers out in the cold.

We ask that you please release a statement explaining the support you are offering this top 30. We ask that you show, through your actions, that this reason was not used as an excuse. 

Your concern for the mental wellbeing of this Top 30, whether genuine or not, does not seem to carry over to the mental wellbeing of the artists of colour who contribute to this industry. Your centring of the wellbeing of this Top 30 is once again showing where your priorities lie. It has also shown a remarkable lack of understanding of what the industry is asking of you.

Let us explain the harm of your statements.

You have said that the reason for cancelling this year’s scholarship is to protect the Top 30 finalists from bullying. We question whether you are the ones who are feeling bullied, as this is what your actions indicate. When people call you out for bad behaviour, you see this as bullying. When people ask the Top 30 to stand in solidarity with artists of colour, you see this as bullying. Calling out racist, unjust structures is not bullying. It may inconvenience you, it may make you feel bad about yourself, it may make you deeply uncomfortable. This is the point. No one has ever been called out for racist behaviour in a way that made them feel comfortable. It is messy and uncomfortable. But it is not bullying.

By labelling any criticism as bullying, you have tried to invalidate and silence any discussion. You will not see the good faith in these discussions. You will not see the attempt to better our industry. Instead you will see ‘troublemakers’ and ‘bullies’. This stops any progress in its tracks.

To summarise, your actions have shown us the following:

• You would rather shut down the scholarship this year than deal with any further criticism or take any further action. Essentially to save face. 
• You would rather use the emotional well-being of the top 30 as a scapegoat, rather than the emotional well-being of countless artists of colour as motivation for change
• You consider any further discussion, activism or action from the community as bullying and harassment and as such, will invalidate further discussion

These actions show that there is still a huge lack of understanding.

You can release countless statements pledging to increase the diversity of your panels, leaders and participants to 20%. These are empty promises. We ask that you take concrete action to show the community that you are committed, as you say you are, to anti-racist work.

We ask that you:

• Reach out to an organisation for anti-racist training. Democracy in Colour is one such organisation. Show us that you are taking steps to learn, not just perform empty allyship.
• Release a statement explaining what will be done with this year’s prize money. Or better yet, donate the prize money from this years scholarship to an anti-racist cause. You could support the AOC Initiative, The People of Cabaret, Stage a Change.
• Release a statement explaining how you are supporting the current Top 30, so that we can see this isn’t just an excuse for stepping away from difficult conversations. If nothing has been done to support the Top 30, and this excuse was disingenuous, we ask for a statement explaining the honest reason for cancelling.
• Use a diversity consulting business for future statements and actions, to assess the potential harm in your actions. Diversity Partners is one such business you could contact.

You have been given an opportunity, however uncomfortable you may find it. You have been given the opportunity to usher great change into our industry. You have resources being handed to you, advice freely given, people who want to assist the changes. There are only two choices here. Either you rise to the opportunity, or you don’t.
