Expression of Interest for non-executive Directors of Marrugeku

About Marrugeku:

Marrugeku is an intercultural dance company working in First Nations communities to create a dynamic portfolio of dance works and development labs for remote and urban Australian and international audiences.

Marrugeku pursues powerful new forms of cultural knowledge and the survival, preservation and growth of Indigenous story, dance, and language through the making of new intercultural performance work.

Marrugeku Inc currently operates as an Indigenous-led incorporated society based in WA in Rubibi/Broome with offices in Perth and Sydney. Marrugeku is in the process of transitioning towards a Company Limited by Guarantee structure, ie Marrugeku Ltd.

About the role:

We currently have two exceptional opportunities to join the Board of Marrugeku and our current priorities are for candidates who are based in Perth and/or Sydney. The Company emphasises both diverse skills and equal opportunity. Marrugeku’s constitution requires a 2/3rd majority of Directors who identify as First Nations.

Your interest in First Nations arts and culture and the performing arts, and your capacity to commit time to the Board and to Marrugeku are crucial. The Board meets five times per annum, mostly online, but including one face to face meeting with a Strategic Planning workshop. Board Directors will be invited to attend performance seasons and key stakeholder events.

The Board and Management are supported by a range of sub-committees and working groups, and we expect that each Board member serves on at least one sub-committee which characteristically meet at least four times per annum.

Directors must be or become Members of the Marrugeku company and can serve up to two terms each of three years duration, or three terms of each of three years duration in the case of Kimberley-based Directors. Directors of the Board will need to meet all requirements under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and thereby be eligible to be a Director.

The role of the Board includes setting strategy as well as oversight of governance, risk and financial management.

Key attributes include:

  • A strong alignment to the purpose of Marrugeku,
  • A willingness to support Marrugeku,
  • A broad understanding of and interest in First Nations arts and culture and the performing arts sector,
  • A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion,
  • Collaborative and respectful approach, and
  • Organisational strategy and leadership.Desirable skills and experience:
  • Previous Board and corporate governance experience especially in the non-profit arts sector (AICD membership and training would be well regarded),
  • Government sector engagement experience,
  • Private giving and fundraising knowledge and experience,
  • Marketing & branding skills and experience (not necessarily in an arts context).
