About the ProjectWakemab is a major First Nations-led dance theatre work created by Naygayiw Gigi Dance Troupe and supported by Rebus Theatre. The project brings together Torres Strait Islander dance, song, language and contemporary performance to tell the story of Wakemab from the Suy Baydham Clan of Saibai Island. The work centres cultural authority, language revitalisation, climate justice and intergenerational knowledge sharing.
The project is preparing for touring, partnerships, workshops and documentary development acrossAustralia and internationally.
Position OverviewThe Creative Producer will support the cultural, logistical and operational delivery of Wakemab. This roleis ideal for an emerging or established First Nations arts worker who is passionate about community-ledpractice, producing, touring and cultural storytelling.
Working collaboratively with Rebus Theatre and Naygayiw Gigi Indigenous Corporation, the Producerwill help coordinate communications, partnerships, logistics, artist support and project delivery whileensuring all work is guided by cultural integrity and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP)principles.
This is a flexible, remote role designed to support a producer living and working in Queensland.
Key Responsibilities
Project Coordination & Producing
- Coordinate day-to-day project administration and communications.
- Support scheduling, planning and delivery of rehearsals, performances, workshops andcommunity engagement activities.
- Assist with touring logistics including travel, accommodation, freight and venue coordination.Liaise with artists, presenters, festivals, schools, community organisations and partners.
- Support the delivery of funding reports, acquittals and project documentation.
Cultural & Community Engagement
- Work respectfully within Torres Strait Islander cultural protocols and processes.
- Support cultural consultation and communication with Elders and community stakeholders.
- Ensure project activity aligns with ICIP principles and approved cultural permissions.
- Help maintain culturally safe working relationships across the project.
Partnerships & Development
- Assist with presenter engagement, touring conversations and partnership development.
- Support preparation of funding applications, presentations and promotional materials.
- Help identify opportunities for workshops, residencies and community programs connected toWakemab.
Communications & Administration
- Maintain project records, meeting notes and coordination systems.
- Support social media and promotional coordination where required.
- Participate in regular online planning and production meetings.
Selection CriteriaEssential
- Experience in arts administration, producing, community engagement or project coordination.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.
- Understanding of cultural protocols and ICIP principles.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Commitment to culturally safe and community-led practice.
Desirable
- Identifies as First Nations (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander).
- Experience in theatre, dance, festivals or touring productions.
- Connections within Queensland and/or Torres Strait Islander arts communities.
- Experience working with grants, presenters or arts funding bodies.
- Driver’s licence and willingness to travel occasionally.
