Tiwi Designs Art centre Manager and Studio Coordinator

Tiwi Designs Aboriginal Corporation

Job description:

Tiwi Designs is seeking a dynamic couple to manage an established Indigenous art centre located on Bathurst Island, Tiwi Islands, NT

About Tiwi Designs Aboriginal Corporation

Tiwi Designs originated in 1969 in the Tiwi township of Wurrumiyanga (formerly Nguiu) on Bathurst Island as was incorporated in 1980. The art centre has become nationally and internationally recognised as a leading Aboriginal-owned art centre producing contemporary Tiwi art for the fine art market. Ceramics, screen printing, etchings, lithographs and paintings in traditional ochres and a variety of carvings and crafts are also created. Tiwi Design is renowned for their unique high quality pukumani pole carvings and diverse natural ochre paintings, unique ceramic sculptures and dynamic screen-printing studio.  Sales are made predominantly through active communication with collectors and reputable galleries, through a solid exhibition schedule, and through clients visiting the art centre.

Since 2014, Tiwi Designs has established a successful cultural day tour ‘Tiwi by Design’ in partnership with SeaLink Ferries. The tour has become very popular and in 2020 Tiwi Designs built a 2 storey 10 room guest house to maximise opportunities in developing cultural tourism products.

The Tiwi Design Manager and Studio Coordinator will manage the day-to-day operations of the art centre. The team offers key support and liaison between the artists, employees, and the marketplace. This is a dynamic role and requires the full commitment from a highly motivated, experienced, and resourceful couple. A demonstrated commitment toward empowerment and facilitating cultural and economic development is essential.

Throughout the year up to 40 artists use the facilities of Tiwi Design with a regular daily stream of around 15 – 20 artists.

This role requires a versatile and grounded couple who are patient and respectful about building relationships within an indigenous community with a goal to  a longer term commitment in working with Tiwi people.

You’ll ideally have experience in cultural tourism and have management skills commensurate with the operating of a successful Indigenous art centre.

You’ll know about Art centre governance, infrastructure and logistics and have great project management skills; as well as a sound understanding of business and revenue generating models.

Relevant tertiary qualifications and experience in a cross cultural or community arts setting are high on the list, and given the location, experience in four-wheel-driving will be a bonus!

This is a 2 -year renewable contract with a 3-month probationary period. The successful couple will be mentored in their respective roles requirements and offered full support as to the complexities of this dynamic and exciting work experience!

Remuneration and benefits will be outlined in the application kit.
