NEW YORK — Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that the fan-favorite Broadway production Waitress: The Musical will arrive on the streaming service Max on February 14, 2025. Adapted from the 2007 film and featuring the Broadway debut of singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, the musical was a critical and commercial success that earned four Tony Award nominations in 2016, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
A Beloved Broadway Hit
Originally premiering on Broadway in 2015, Waitress: The Musical quickly gained acclaim for its catchy score and heartfelt storyline. Music and lyrics come from Bareilles, whose songwriting garnered one of the show’s Tony nominations. The production itself is adapted for the stage by Jessie Nelson and was directed by Diane Paulus during its Broadway run.
From Stage to Screen
Bringing the show to the screen is director Brett Sullivan, who captured the production so it can reach audiences beyond the theater. Alongside Bareilles in the film version are performers Charity Angél Dawson, Caitlin Houlahan, Drew Gehling, Dakin Matthews, Eric Anderson, Joe Tippett, and Christopher Fitzgerald.
The Story
Inspired by the 2007 film of the same name, Waitress follows an expert pie maker who is trapped in a loveless marriage and small-town life. A baking contest in a nearby county offers a possible path to a brighter future, spurring her on a journey of self-discovery and renewal. Along the way, the character relies on her friendships, an unanticipated romance, and her long-lost dreams to navigate challenges and reclaim her sense of hope.
Anticipation Builds
With the original Broadway run having won over theatergoers through its humor, heartfelt music, and relatable themes, many fans are looking forward to seeing the production on Max. Its arrival on the streaming platform aims to bring the uplifting narrative—centered on friendship, community, and the pursuit of long-cherished aspirations—to a wider audience.
Release Details
As of now, viewers can plan to stream Waitress: The Musical exclusively on Max starting February 14, 2025, joining the platform’s growing roster of theater-to-screen adaptations. More details regarding the production’s promotional and release plans are expected to follow in the coming months.
