Upcoming Wicked Movie Adaptation Promises an Intimate Experience

LOS ANGELES – JAN 26: Ariana Grande at the 62nd Grammy Awards at the Staples Center on January 26, 2020 in Los Angeles, CA

The eagerly awaited Wicked movie adaptation is set to offer fans a deeper and more intimate experience than the beloved stage production. The musical, based on the hit Broadway show and the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, will explore the characters and their stories with unprecedented depth.

The director has highlighted how the film will use close-up camera work to delve into the emotional nuances of the characters. “We get to be more intimate. We get the camera two inches from their face, so we can see when they’re lying, when they’re not, or when they’re lying to themselves. That brings a lot of power to the show that you can’t have on a stage,” he explained.

The film will be released in two parts, with the first installment hitting theaters on November 22. The story follows the journey of two young witches as they form a close bond despite their differences.

The director also shared that the new movie will take the source material to new levels, emphasizing the layered and prophetic lyrics of the original composer. The film adaptation allows for a more detailed exploration of the characters’ emotions and motivations.

In addition to the film, the director has released a memoir, which chronicles their journey from growing up as a first-generation immigrant in Silicon Valley to directing some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The memoir includes personal stories and reflections on their upbringing, family, and cultural identity.

Reflecting on their first experience with Wicked during its pre-Broadway run, the director shared how the musical’s themes resonated deeply, particularly a key musical number that helped them through difficult times. They expressed a long-held desire to bring the story to the big screen.
