Tony Awards 2024 Nominations Prediction Center: A Battle of 20 Musicals on Broadway

The 2023-2024 Broadway season kicked off to an electrifying start, notably with ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ making a dramatic entrance at the Winter Garden Theatre. Despite being the sole survivor from the season’s early offerings, it faces stiff competition from a slew of closures that nonetheless left indelible marks, including the Britney Spears-inspired ‘Once Upon a One More Time,’ Barry Manilow’s ‘Harmony,’ the heartfelt ‘How to Dance in Ohio,’ and the immersive ‘Here Lies Love,’ which plunged audiences into the tumultuous life of Imelda Marcos.

Among the winter’s highlights was the premiere of ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ by Adam Guettel, marking his first Broadway musical since the acclaimed ‘The Light in the Piazza.’ With standout performances by Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James, the show extended its run, signaling strong potential for Tony recognition.

The anticipation builds further with the spring lineup, featuring adaptations of beloved stories such as ‘The Great Gatsby,’ ‘The Notebook,’ ‘The Outsiders,’ and ‘Water for Elephants.’ These adaptations aim to capture the magic of their original forms, with star-studded casts and creative musical scores poised to enchant Broadway audiences.

Also vying for attention are the real-life inspired musicals ‘Suffs,’ spotlighting the 1913 suffragist movement, and ‘Lempicka,’ the story of Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka, showcasing the talents of Shaina Taub and Eden Espinosa, respectively. Adding to the mix are musicals featuring the songs of Alicia Keys in ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and Huey Lewis in ‘The Heart of Rock and Roll,’ promising a diverse and engaging season.

Revival productions have already made waves, with ‘Merrily We Roll Along,’ ‘Gutenberg! The Musical!’ and ‘Monty Python’s Spamalot’ drawing acclaim for their performances and innovative staging. The season’s revivals, including ‘The Wiz,’ ‘The Who’s Tommy,’ and an immersive ‘Cabaret,’ are set to further intensify the competition, leaving Tony voters with tough decisions ahead.
