New York, NY - June 09, 2019: Tina Fey attends the 73rd Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall
Celebrated writer and actress Tina Fey, alongside her husband and composer Jeff Richmond, graced the New York City premiere of the movie musical adaptation of ‘Mean Girls,’ a 2004 comedy classic. The couple, who tied the knot in 2001, have added another feather to their cap by co-writing this much-anticipated musical theater adaptation. Parents to two daughters, Alice, 18, and Penelope, 12, Fey and Richmond have a history of successful collaborations.
Their professional partnership extends back to their time at ‘Saturday Night Live’ and Fey’s critically acclaimed sitcom ’30 Rock.’ In 2015, Richmond took on executive production and composition for ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,’ a Netflix sitcom co-created by Fey.
The ‘Mean Girls’ musical, which originally opened on Broadway in 2018 and closed in 2020, is now transitioning from stage to screen, thanks to a deal with Paramount Pictures. Lorne Michaels reprises his role as a producer, with Fey, aged 53, on board as the screenwriter. Richmond, 63, has adapted the stage musical’s songs for the film’s soundtrack, which includes 11 songs from the original stage play and two new tracks, one co-written by Reneé Rapp and another featuring Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion.
In the 2024 film adaptation, Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from the original 2004 production as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, respectively. They are joined by a stellar cast including Rapp, Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Christopher Briney, Busy Philipps, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, and Bebe Wood.
The story of ‘Mean Girls’ revolves around Cady Heron (originally played by Lindsay Lohan), a homeschooled teenager experiencing public high school for the first time. She becomes entangled in the dynamics of a popular clique known as the Plastics, leading to a whirlwind of teenage drama and social politics. The original film has since become a comedic cult favorite.
Now, ‘Mean Girls’ returns to theaters in a new avatar, promising to charm audiences with its unique blend of humor and musical flair. The film is set to release nationwide on Jan. 12.
