The Book of Mormon sets Broadway return date after Eugene O’Neill Theatre fire

The Book of Mormon is set to resume Broadway performances on Thursday, May 21, following a fire at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre earlier this month.

The Tony Award-winning musical has been dark since May 4, when a fire broke out at the theatre, which has been home to the production since it opened on Broadway in 2011. Performances had previously been cancelled through May 20 while repair and safety work continued inside the venue.

A spokesperson for the production said work inside the theatre was progressing and that the show was currently on track to return on May 21. ATG Entertainment, which owns and operates the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, and the production have thanked the FDNY and the Department of Buildings for their support during the repair process.

Following the fire, the building was safely cleared of personnel. One firefighter was injured while responding to the incident.

The satirical musical currently stars Kevin Clay as Elder Price, Diego Enrico as Elder Cunningham and Sydney Quildon as Nabulungi, alongside Charlie Franklin as Elder McKinley and Jacques C. Smith as Mafala Hatimbi.

Created by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon won nine Tony Awards in 2011, including Best Musical. The original Broadway cast featured Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad as Elder Price and Elder Cunningham.

As part of the show’s 15th anniversary celebrations, the Eugene O’Neill Theatre box office is scheduled to reopen to the public on May 15 at 10am. The first 50 people in line will be able to purchase up to two $15 tickets each for select performances across the summer.
