Stranger Things: The First Shadow is proving to be far more than a screen to stage novelty, with the ambitious production delivering an emotionally rich and visually spectacular expansion of the Stranger Things universe.

Serving as an official prequel to the hit Netflix series created by the Duffer Brothers, the play delves into the origins of Henry Creel, years before he becomes the terrifying Vecna. Set in 1959, the story unfolds in Hawkins, Indiana, offering fresh insight into characters and relationships that fans will recognise, while remaining accessible to newcomers.

The narrative introduces younger versions of familiar figures, including Jim Hopper Jr., who struggles to find his place, and Joyce Maldonado, whose ambitions stretch well beyond the confines of Hawkins as she dreams of directing the perfect high school production. Bob Newby also appears, alongside Henry Creel and his family, who arrive in town seeking a new beginning, only to discover that the past has a way of resurfacing.

The production first premiered in London’s West End, with previews beginning in November 2023 and an official opening in December that year. A Broadway production followed, opening at the Marquis Theatre in April 2025. Both the West End and Broadway productions are currently scheduled to run into 2026.

On Broadway, the scale of the staging is immediately striking. The set design is vast and constantly shifting, transforming the stage into a living version of Hawkins that pulls the audience straight into the story. Combined with confident performances and tightly controlled pacing, the production matches the scope and intensity audiences expect from the television series.

Visually, the production does not hold back. The appearance of the Mind Flayer is a show stopping moment, delivering a visceral thrill that underscores the play’s commitment to spectacle.
