Stranger Things season 5 ties to Broadway prequel, Duffers curbed spoilers in THE FIRST SHADOW

The Duffer Brothers say the fifth and final season of Stranger Things will delve deeper into Henry Creel’s past, aligning with the Broadway prequel STRANGER THINGS, THE FIRST SHADOW, while reaching further back in the timeline. The creators revealed they worked with the stage team to avoid plot reveals, blocking material that overlapped too closely with season 5 so the series could unveil key turns on screen.

Set in 1959, the four time Tony Award winning THE FIRST SHADOW traces a young Henry’s arrival in Hawkins, his emergence on Dr Martin Brenner’s radar, and the birth of the town’s horrors. Louis McCartney originated Henry on the West End and on Broadway. The play also features younger versions of Joyce Maldonado, James Hopper Jr, and Bob Newby. The Duffers note the stage story is not required viewing, yet it enriches the final season’s context.

Season 5 picks up in the autumn of 1987, more than a year after the season 4 finale. Hawkins remains under military occupation following the rifts. Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, is back in hiding from the government. The group is focused on finding and stopping Vecna, portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower, who has gone off the grid. The new episodes will also explore Henry’s backstory before Hawkins Lab, sharpening the connection between Vecna and Will.

Release plan
Netflix will roll out the final season in three beats. Four episodes arrive on 26 November. Three more land on Christmas Day. A two hour series finale streams on New Year’s Eve, with a limited theatrical release in select North American cinemas the same day.

Creative team
THE FIRST SHADOW is directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Kate Trefry. On television, the Duffers lead the concluding chapter, positioning the play as connective tissue while keeping the key revelations for the screen.
