Romy And Michele The Musical workshop underway

The American comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion debuted in 1997 starring Lisa Kudrow, Mira Sorvino, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim and Janeane Garofalo. The show follows Romy and Michele, two 28 year old Californian women who have failed to achieve the success, that they believe, their high school classmates would envy. As a result they embark on creating fake careers and relationships to impress their former classmates for their 10 year high school reunion.

Romy White and Michele Weinberger (Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow) live together in Los Angeles, California. Romy works as a cashier at a car dealership and Michele is unemployed. They are single, unambitious, and enjoy a casual lifestyle. Romy encounters former high school classmate, Heather Mooney (Janeane Garofalo), who informs Romy about their upcoming ten-year high school reunion in Tucson, Arizona. The characters were originally developed from the stage play Ladies Room which also starred Kudrow.

Rumour has it a workshop is to be held on March 18 in New York for a musical adaptation of the movie. Romy and Michele The Musical had it’s world premiere at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre with Cortney Wolfson and Stephanie Renee Wall who played Romy and Michele respectively. Both Wolfson and Renee Wall will reprise their roles for the workshop presentations.

With a book by Robin Schiff and a score by Brandon Jay and Gwnedolyn Sanford, the musical is based on the original 1997 US comedy film. The upcoming workshop is said to feature new songs and a number of book rewrites. Jordan Kai Burnett will be joining the cast playing Heather Mooney, Hannah Schuerman as Toby Walters and Tess Soltau as Christie Masters.

The producer Stephen Soucy has confirmed that the musical is aiming to play at an off Broadway venue at the end of 2020 with intentions of moving to Broadway thereafter.
