The ongoing national riots have led to widespread cancellations of theatrical performances, including major productions such as ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Pretty Woman.’
Earlier today, two scheduled performances of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in Sunderland were cancelled due to safety concerns.
The touring production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar,’ currently in Cheltenham, issued a statement on social media: ‘Due to circumstances beyond our control, it has become necessary for us to cancel tonight’s performance of JCS. Please accept our apologies for the disappointment this will undoubtedly cause and for the short notice. Please contact your original point of sale to exchange your ticket for another performance or request a refund.’
Similarly, the production of ‘Pretty Woman’ announced the cancellation of its tour performance in Southend, citing planned protests in the area. The statement read: ‘With protests planned to take place in Southend today, we are regretfully unable to provide the two scheduled performances at the Cliffs Pavilion. All those with tickets for the affected performances will be contacted to make the necessary arrangements to reschedule or refund their purchases.’
Additionally, ‘Come From Away’ at Newcastle Theatre Royal saw its performances cancelled. However, the theatre has confirmed that all future performances are set to proceed as scheduled.
Theatre companies and venues across the nation are closely monitoring the situation, prioritizing the safety of their audiences and staff amidst the unrest.
