Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer, giving UK audiences another chance to watch the screen version of the hit stage musical from home. The film is directed by Matthew Warchus and is also listed by the Roald Dahl Story Company as streaming on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
The 2022 musical film stars Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood, a gifted young girl whose intelligence and imagination set her apart from the neglectful adults around her. Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough play her self absorbed parents, while Emma Thompson appears as the fearsome Miss Trunchbull, the headteacher of Crunchem Hall. Lashana Lynch also stars as Miss Honey, the teacher who recognises Matilda’s extraordinary potential.
The film adapts the Royal Shakespeare Company stage musical, itself based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel. Dennis Kelly wrote the screenplay, with songs by Tim Minchin, whose music helped turn the stage version into an international success.
The story follows Matilda as she moves from an unhappy home into an even more intimidating school environment. Crunchem Hall is ruled by Miss Trunchbull, whose cruelty makes life miserable for pupils and staff alike. But Matilda’s sharp mind, love of books and growing confidence give her the courage to challenge the adults who underestimate her.
Matilda The Musical had its world premiere at the 66th BFI London Film Festival in October 2022, before its UK and Ireland cinema release later that year. The BFI announced the film as the festival’s opening night gala, with screenings also planned around the UK.
The film went on to receive recognition at the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards, earning nominations for Outstanding British Film and Make Up and Hair.
Its arrival on BBC iPlayer gives families a colourful, energetic option for weekend viewing, with the musical blending Dahl’s familiar story of childhood rebellion with large scale dance numbers, comic villains and a strong message about courage, kindness and standing up to bullies.
For viewers who grew up with the 1996 film adaptation starring Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, this version offers a very different take on the same beloved character. Instead of leaning mainly on fantasy comedy, the musical version expands Matilda’s world through songs, choreography and a heightened visual style.
With its mix of British talent, theatrical flair and family appeal, Matilda The Musical remains one of the more high profile screen adaptations of Dahl’s work, and its BBC iPlayer availability should bring the story to a fresh audience of young viewers, parents and longtime fans.
