John Cleese’s ‘Fawlty Towers’ Takes the London Stage with a Nostalgic Flair

Hey theater lovers, get ready to check into the zany world of ‘Fawlty Towers’—right on London’s West End! The legendary John Cleese, the mastermind and star behind the classic 1975 TV series, is bringing Basil Fawlty and the gang to the stage. Cleese, teaming up once again with original co-writer Connie Booth, has whipped up a two-hour theatrical treat. It’s a mash-up of three iconic episodes: “The Hotel Inspector,” “The Germans,” and “Communication Problems.” And yes, it includes the controversial “The Germans” episode, which stirred up quite the fuss back in 2020. Cleese wasn’t shy about calling out the decision to pull the episode, making a stand for the sitcom’s original spirit amidst the evolving cultural landscape.

Under the direction of the fabulous Caroline Jay Ranger, known for hits like “Only Fools and Horses The Musical” and “Monty Python Live,” the play promises a whirlwind of nostalgia and laughter. Picture this: Basil, ever the opportunist, tries to charm the socks off guests he suspects are undercover hotel inspectors. Add to the mix a group of German tourists, the nightmare guest Mrs. Richards, and Basil’s secret gambling win that he’s desperate to hide from the ever-watchful Sybil, and you’ve got a recipe for chaos.

Speaking of the cast, it’s a lineup that’ll knock your socks off! Adam Jackson-Smith slips into Basil’s shoes, with Anna-Jane Casey as the formidable Sybil. Hemi Yeroham brings Manuel’s lovable cluelessness to life, and Victoria Fox steps in as the cool-headed Polly. The cast is packed with talent, each bringing a beloved character from the sitcom back to life. From the gruff Major (Paul Nicholas) to the hilariously exasperating Mrs. Richards (Rachel Izen), and a whole array of hotel guests and staff, this crew is set to bring the house down.

So, if you’re up for a trip down memory lane with a side of side-splitting comedy, ‘Fawlty Towers’ at the West End is your ticket to a riot of a time. Get ready for a stay you won’t soon forget!
