Jennifer Hudson’s Surprise Stage cameo lifts Broadway’s Smash

Broadway audiences at the Imperial Theatre were treated to an unexpected star turn on Thursday, 15 May, when EGOT-winning performer and producer Jennifer Hudson stepped into the spotlight during the curtain call of the new musical Smash. Hudson, who joined the show’s producing team last year and appeared in the second series of the original 2012 television drama, congratulated the company and delivered a brief reprise of “I Can’t Let Go,” the number written for her TV character.

The appearance marked Hudson’s first in-person visit since the production’s 10 April opening, which she missed while filming her Los Angeles-based talk show. Her on-stage cameo capped an already buoyant evening led by Robyn Hurder as Ivy Lynn and Caroline Bowman as understudy-turned-leading-lady Karen Cartwright, roles originated on screen by Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee.

Smash adapts the cult NBC series into a fresh backstage comedy about the creation of Bombshell, a fictional Marilyn Monroe musical. The stage version retains fan-favourite songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman—including “The 20th Century Fox Mambo,” “They Just Keep Moving the Line,” and the Emmy-nominated “Let Me Be Your Star”—while streamlining the plot to focus on Ivy’s obsessive approach to embodying Marilyn and the creative chaos that ensues. Direction is by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman, with expanded choreography from the show’s original television choreographer, Joshua Bergasse.

The production’s creative roster also features book writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin and a supporting cast that includes two-time Tony nominee Brooks Ashmanskas as driven director Nigel; Krysta Rodriguez and John Behlmann as songwriting duo Tracy and Jerry; and Kristine Nielsen as acting coach Susan. After a strong advance and enthusiastic early notices, Smash heads into the heart of awards season with multiple Tony nominations already secured.

Hudson’s impromptu appearance, lasting only a few minutes, nevertheless underscored her dual role as both artistic champion and marketing ace. Fans shared clips across social media almost instantly, giving the production an added publicity boost just weeks before final Tony ballots are due. With the musical’s momentum building and its celebrity producer back in New York, Smash looks set for a robust summer at the box office.
