Hannah Waddingham reflects on career turning points, WICKED speculation, RIDE OR DIE and returning to TED LASSO

Hannah Waddingham has reflected on the unexpected career moments that helped shape her path from West End performer to internationally recognised screen star, as speculation continues around her possible involvement in WICKED and anticipation builds for her next major television roles.

In a new interview, Waddingham looked back on one of the earliest turning points in her career, recalling how a poorly received London musical ultimately opened the door to one of the most important professional relationships of her stage life.

In 2000, Waddingham appeared in a musical about French artist Henri de Toulouse Lautrec at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre. While the production closed early after receiving negative reviews, her individual performance as Suzanne Valadon attracted strong critical attention. That response helped bring her to the attention of Andrew Lloyd Webber, who was then working with Ben Elton on THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.

Waddingham was subsequently selected for the project, a move that helped establish her as a major West End talent. The experience became part of a long theatre career that would later include acclaimed performances in productions such as SPAMALOT, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, INTO THE WOODS and THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Her reflections arrive at a particularly busy moment in her career. Waddingham, who became a global favourite through her Emmy winning performance as Rebecca Welton in TED LASSO, has remained closely associated with the role even as she has expanded into film, hosting, music and action driven screen work.

The actor is also attached to the new action series RIDE OR DIE, marking another step in a career that has increasingly moved between comedy, drama, music and large scale screen projects. While Waddingham first built her reputation on stage, her screen work has placed her among the most recognisable British performers of the past decade.

The interview also comes amid ongoing fan speculation about WICKED, particularly around the role of Madame Morrible. Waddingham’s musical theatre background, vocal ability and commanding screen presence have made her a recurring subject of online conversation among fans of the franchise. The role, originally created on Broadway by Carole Shelley and later played by a number of high profile performers, remains one of the musical’s most distinctive supporting parts.

Waddingham has frequently been celebrated for bringing theatrical grandeur to television and film, a quality that has made her a natural figure in fan casting discussions. Her work in TED LASSO introduced her to a broader international audience, but her stage career had already established her as a performer capable of combining vocal power, comic timing and emotional precision.

Her return to the world of TED LASSO remains another major point of interest. The Apple TV+ series became a breakout hit, with Waddingham’s Rebecca evolving from a guarded club owner into one of the show’s emotional anchors. Her performance earned widespread acclaim and helped redefine her career on a global scale.

For Waddingham, the renewed attention appears to reflect a career built less on a single breakthrough than on a series of hard won opportunities. From early reviews that singled her out in a struggling production, to West End success, to international recognition through TED LASSO, her trajectory has been shaped by persistence, versatility and a willingness to move between genres.

As she looks toward new projects and revisits one of her most beloved screen roles, Waddingham remains in a rare position, equally at home in musical theatre, prestige television, comedy and action. Her career, once pushed forward by a review that separated her performance from a troubled production, has become a reminder that even professional setbacks can become unlikely openings.
