The Broadway revival of Gypsy ended its run on a high, climbing to $1.607 million in its final week. The production, starring Audra McDonald, played its last performance on 17 August at the Majestic Theatre, filled 94 percent of seats, and posted an average ticket price of $134.58. It ranked fourth among all shows for the week, its strongest tally since winter.
Hamilton led the box office with $2.2 million, moving ahead of long time leader Wicked, which posted $2.0 million. The Lion King followed with $1.9 million.
New arrival Mamma Mia! opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on 14 August and grossed $1.606 million across its first eight show week, which included comped opening and press previews. The musical played to 100 percent capacity and finished fifth on the weekly leaderboard.
Straight play standout Purpose continued its post Tonys surge. The recent Best Play and Pulitzer winner hit a new weekly high of $763,560, played to near full houses, and set a new average ticket price mark of $165.06.
Despite several bright spots, the broader market softened. Total industry grosses fell 4 percent week over week and attendance slipped 2.3 percent, a familiar early fall lull before the next wave of openings.
