The beloved fairy-tale adventure THE PRINCESS BRIDE is edging closer to the stage with a powerhouse creative line-up now firmly in place. A fresh audition notice confirms that producer Jeffrey Seller, whose name is synonymous with HAMILTON, is steering the long-gestating adaptation, while Tony-winning director Alex Timbers (MOULIN ROUGE!, BEETLEJUICE) will guide its first workshop later this year.
Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony-winning duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have boarded the project to craft an original score. Their résumé already boasts global earworms like “Let It Go” and “Into the Unknown”, making them a major draw for families and musical-theatre devotees alike.
The show’s script will come from Bob Martin and Rick Elice, whose combined credits include THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, SMASH and JERSEY BOYS. Pulitzer- and Tony-winning composer Tom Kitt (NEXT TO NORMAL) has signed on as music supervisor, promising lush orchestrations to match the Lopezes’ melodies.
First published as a novel by William Goldman in 1973 and immortalised on screen by Rob Reiner in 1987, THE PRINCESS BRIDE follows farmhand-turned-pirate Westley and his quest to rescue Princess Buttercup from villains, ROUSes and, of course, Inigo Montoya’s vow for revenge. The story’s blend of romance, swashbuckling action and tongue-in-cheek humour has earned it cult status across generations. Seller’s new stage version aims to bottle that same charm while adding full-blown musical spectacle.
A developmental work session is slated for later in 2025, after which the production team will chart its course toward a full premiere. No casting has been announced, but the call-out suggests a large ensemble covering everything from sword-wielding heroes to screeching eels. Theatre insiders expect further updates, perhaps even an out-of-town try-out, once the workshop concludes.
With Seller’s commercial savvy, Timbers’ visual flair and the Lopezes’ knack for blockbuster hooks, THE PRINCESS BRIDE musical could join the ranks of film-to-stage successes like ALADDIN and BACK TO THE FUTURE. For now, fans can only wait, and practise their best “Inigo Montoya” impressions, until the creative team unveils more about Florin’s tuneful new chapter.
