The theatrical world is set to receive a significant addition to its discography with the upcoming release of the original cast recording of Stephen Sondheim’s final musical, ‘Here We Are’. The musical, which made its world premiere in October 2023 at The Shed’s Griffin Theater, has captivated audiences during its off-Broadway run, set to conclude on January 21.
Concord Theatricals Recordings is spearheading the release of the album, which was recorded in early January at the renowned Power Station at BerkleeNYC. The production sees Sean Patrick Flahaven and Bill Rosenfield at the helm as producers. Flahaven, a veteran collaborator with Sondheim, brings over 25 years of experience working with the late composer-lyricist, including his Grammy-winning work on the 2022 Broadway revival cast recording of ‘Into the Woods’.
In a statement, Flahaven expressed his deep sense of honor in contributing to this landmark project. “Working on this album is not just a professional milestone but also a personal tribute to Steve [Sondheim], who was a friend, colleague, and mentor to many of us,” he said. Flahaven emphasized the album’s role in highlighting Sondheim’s unmatched legacy as a theater composer-lyricist.
‘Here We Are’ draws inspiration from Luis Buñuel’s cinematic masterpieces, ‘The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie’ and ‘The Exterminating Angel’. Helmed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, the musical boasts a stellar cast, including Francois Battiste, Tracie Bennett, Bobby Cannavale, Micaela Diamond, Amber Gray, Jin Ha, Rachel Bay Jones, Denis O’Hare, Steven Pasquale, David Hyde Pierce, and Jeremy Shamos.
The production’s creative team features Tony nominee David Ives as the book writer, with choreography by Sam Pinkleton, set and costume design by David Zinn, lighting by Natasha Katz, sound by Tom Gibbons, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, music supervision and additional arrangements by Alexander Gemignani, and hair design by Robert Pickens and Katie Gell. This original cast recording is poised to be a fitting homage to Sondheim’s illustrious career and a treasure for musical theatre aficionados worldwide.
