The release of a deleted scene from the blockbuster Wicked movie has left fans questioning the decision-making behind the film’s final cut. The scene, leaked online ahead of the movie’s streaming debut, has sparked heated debates on social media, with many arguing it was crucial to the story’s emotional depth.
Released in November 2024, Wicked quickly became a global phenomenon, earning a spot as one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The adaptation of the beloved musical has been lauded for its performances, music, and visuals. However, as bonus content begins to surface ahead of the digital release on January 6, fans are discovering scenes that never made it to the big screen—most notably, one set during Elphaba and Glinda’s journey to the Emerald City.
In the deleted scene, Elphaba and Glinda share a meaningful moment aboard a high-speed rail line en route to the Emerald City. The clip showcases their evolving friendship, providing much-needed context for their growing bond. In the theatrical release, this journey is barely acknowledged, giving the impression that the Emerald City is just moments away from Shiz University.
Fans have taken to platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration.
The scene’s absence has led to widespread criticism, with many accusing the filmmakers of sacrificing character development for pacing.
As Wicked prepares for its streaming release, fans can look forward to a variety of bonus features, including a singalong version of the film and a 40-minute behind-the-scenes documentary exploring the making of Oz’s cinematic world. However, the inclusion of the train scene in the bonus material has reignited the debate about what should have been kept in the movie.
Despite the controversy, Wicked continues to ride a wave of success. The film recently earned four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and acting nods for Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda). Grande, in particular, has emerged as a strong contender for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, further cementing her status as a standout performer in the adaptation.
One fan on social media exclaimed, “This scene was such a vital piece of the puzzle—they shouldn’t have cut it!” Another added, “It feels like they robbed us of key moments that made their relationship believable.”
As Wicked prepares to make its digital debut, the debate over the train scene is likely to continue, underscoring just how passionately fans feel about the story and its characters. Whether the filmmakers will address these concerns in future releases remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Wicked has cast a spell that isn’t fading anytime soon.

Fans would be outraged if any scene wasn't included.
Irrespective that the first half of the movie is already just a touch shorter than the entire musical.
How quickly people have forgotten these were the same selfish fans that thought the cinema were their private singing space.
