Country music legend Dolly Parton is bringing her life story to the Broadway stage in a new musical titled Hello, I’m Dolly, set to debut in 2026. True to her sparkling personality, Dolly is not holding back on the glitz, glamour, or heartwarming tales from her journey, from her humble beginnings in Tennessee to becoming a country icon.

Dolly, 78, shared some juicy details about the upcoming show during a chat with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. “I’m writing my life story as a musical for Broadway,” she revealed. “We’re working on it now, and it takes months and months to get those kinds of things together.” The musical will feature all her biggest hits along with brand-new songs, giving fans an inside look at what was really going on behind the scenes during her rise to stardom.

What’s Hello, I’m Dolly All About?

The title is a nod to Dolly’s 1967 debut album, which included fan favorites like “Dumb Blonde” and “Something Fishy.” The musical has been in the works for years, with major inspiration coming from Dolly’s 2015 TV movie Coat of Many Colors, which was a huge hit with viewers. The musical’s first act will focus on Dolly’s early years, growing up with 11 siblings in Tennessee, while the second act will capture her days in Nashville and beyond. Expect a deep dive into some of her most personal stories, including the hardships of her youth and the highs and lows of her legendary career.

Who’s Making It Happen?

Dolly is teaming up with longtime collaborator Maria Schlatter to write the book, while Bartlett Sher, known for his work on Broadway hits like The Bridges of Madison County and Fiddler on the Roof, will direct. The musical’s score will be composed by Dolly herself, blending her timeless classics with fresh new tunes. The production team includes heavyweights like Adam Speers for ATG Productions and Danny Nozell for CTK Enterprises.

Dolly on Broadway: Not Her First Rodeo

Though Dolly has never performed on Broadway, she’s no stranger to the stage. In 2009, she brought 9 to 5: The Musicalto Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for Best New Musical. Her music has also appeared in regional productions and TV specials, proving that her storytelling magic knows no bounds.

Who Will Play Dolly?

The big question on everyone’s mind: Who will step into Dolly’s iconic shoes (and wig)? Dolly hinted that the show might feature three actresses to portray her at different stages of her life, similar to The Cher Show. Kristin Chenoweth has been campaigning hard for the role, and Dolly has repeatedly expressed her support, calling Chenoweth “fantastic.” Carrie Underwood and Miley Cyrus, Dolly’s goddaughter, have also been floated as possible picks, with fans clamoring for their chance to see these stars embody the queen of country music.

No official casting announcements have been made, but one thing’s for sure: whoever takes on the role will have some big shoes (and rhinestones) to fill.

Hello, I’m Dolly promises to be a must-see celebration of Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life and career, filled with the songs and stories that have made her a beloved icon for decades. Stay tuned—this is one Broadway debut you won’t want to miss!
