Following the enormous success of the filmed musical production of Hamilton, on Disney+’s streaming platform, reports are circulating that Aladdin will be the next musical to make the leap from stage back to screen. Since debuting at the Prince Edward Theatre in 2016, the musical has entertained over two million theatregoers. Prior to its final performance on Saturday 24 August 2019, the production was filmed for worldwide release.
Disney paid a staggering $75 million for the rights to the Hamilton film in February 2020 in what is believed to be one of the largest film acquisitions ever. The West End production of Aladdin was originally planned for an early 2020 release on Disney’s streaming service, however once the rights for Hamilton were secured the lineup was rescheduled.
Filmedonstage.com are reporting that Disney hopes to retain their newly subscribed musical theatre audience by releasing ‘Aladdin: Live From The West End’ later this year.
The musical opened to critical acclaim at the Prince Edward Theatre on 15 June 2016 and closed nearly 3 years later. The upcoming live recording will feature Broadway cast member Trevor Dion Nicholas as Genie, and joined by various cast members from several productions of Aladdin around the world for this special filming.
