Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Broadway’s ‘Othello’ at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre
Broadway is gearing up for a blockbuster revival of Othello, featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal in leading roles. Directed by Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon, the production will see Washington as the tragic hero Othello, and Gyllenhaal as his cunning nemesis, Iago. The performances will kick off on February 24, 2025, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, with the official opening night slated for March 23. This limited 15-week run will conclude on June 8.
The play, a gripping tale of jealousy, betrayal, and the destructive power of manipulation, follows Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army. As he navigates his newfound marriage to Desdemona, his trusted officer Iago, fueled by his own envious ambitions, begins a malicious campaign to plant seeds of doubt and suspicion in Othello’s mind. The resulting spiral of mistrust and rage leads to a devastating and tragic downfall, making Othello one of Shakespeare’s most powerful and enduring tragedies.
This marks Washington’s first return to Broadway since his acclaimed performance in The Iceman Cometh in 2018, and reunites him with Leon, with whom he collaborated on Fences and A Raisin in the Sun. Gyllenhaal, last seen on Broadway in 2019’s Sea Wall/A Life, will bring his formidable stage presence to the role of Iago. Rising West End star Molly Osborne joins the cast as Desdemona, adding to the high-profile lineup.
Tickets will be available for presale to American Express card members starting at 10 AM ET on September 6. A fan presale via OthelloBway.com begins on September 12 at 10 AM ET, with general sales opening on September 13 at 12 PM ET.
