Broadway is set to collide with rock royalty this August when JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR storms the Hollywood Bowl for a strictly limited engagement. Pop powerhouse Adam Lambert has been tapped to play Judas opposite Cynthia Erivo as Jesus, uniting two of musical theatre’s most fearless talents in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s iconic rock opera.
The all-star staging runs for just three performances, 1–3 August, transforming the Bowl into a first-century arena of power chords and passion plays. With only one weekend to catch the production, demand for seats is expected to eclipse even last summer’s sell-out concerts.
Erivo’s casting as Jesus has already made waves: she becomes the first openly queer Black woman to headline the role at a major U.S. venue. Lambert, fresh off a critically hailed Broadway stint as the Emcee in Cabaret, now tackles Judas—adding another openly LGBTQ+ interpretation to the show’s long legacy of boundary-pushing performers. Together, the pair promises a dynamic on-stage chemistry that reimagines familiar characters through a modern, inclusive lens.
Tony Award–winning director-choreographer Sergio Trujillo helms the revival, aiming to blend rock-concert energy with cinematic storytelling across the Bowl’s massive stage. Two-time Grammy- and Tony-winner Stephen Oremus will conduct the 35-piece orchestra, ensuring the score’s signature guitars and gospel-inflected anthems resonate through every tier of the 17,000-seat amphitheatre.
While theatre fans have celebrated the bold casting, predictable pockets of conservative backlash have surfaced online, objecting to a queer, racially diverse Jesus and Judas. Yet JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR has long featured inclusive line-ups—from John Legend’s turn as Jesus in NBC’s 2018 live telecast to all-female concept albums—demonstrating its enduring adaptability.
No announcement has been made for Mary Magdalene, leaving one key role still under wraps. With rehearsals set to begin in June, additional casting is expected shortly. Tickets go on public sale next Friday via the Hollywood Bowl’s official website and box office. Given the production’s limited window and headline casts, early purchase is strongly advised.
