Curtain set to rise on ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ with confirmed premiere date

The forthcoming Broadway rendition of ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ is slated to premiere on 10th October. Under the directorship of Maria Friedman, this eagerly anticipated production is scheduled to commence its previews from 19th September and will be showcased for a limited period until 24th March 2024 at the Hudson Theatre in New York City.

Merrily We Roll Along is a musical with a score by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. It’s based on a 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.

The musical is unique in its structure as it tells the story backward in time. It starts in the present and moves backward, tracing the lives of wealthy, jaded composer Franklin Shepard and his two estranged friends through each milestone of their personal and professional lives, which are often intertwined.

Central themes of the musical revolve around friendship, compromise, and the price of success. The main characters include Franklin Shepard, who becomes a film producer and is seen compromising his artistic values for commercial success; Charley Kringas, his best friend and a playwright; and Mary Flynn, another close friend and a writer.

Throughout the narrative, we witness the changing dynamics of their friendships, the choices they make, the dreams they sacrifice, and the impact of success and failure on their relationships. The reverse chronology adds depth to the narrative, allowing the audience to see the outcomes before understanding the decisions and events that led to them.

This adaptation, which saw its inaugural performance at New York Theatre Workshop in Off-Broadway in 2022, will once again feature Jonathan Groff in the role of Franklin Shepard, Lindsay Mendez portraying Mary Flynn, and Daniel Radcliffe as Charley Kringas. The leading ensemble also introduces Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth, and Reg Rogers representing Joe.
